Worked example
A 20 kg child has a stated safe range of 10–15 mg/kg/day. The order is 100 mg every 12 hours.
- 1Safe range: 20 kg × 10–15 mg/kg/day = 200–300 mg/day.
- 2Ordered daily dose: 100 mg × 2 doses/day = 200 mg/day.
- 3Compare the ordered daily dose with the stated safe range.
Answer: The ordered 200 mg/day is within the stated 200–300 mg/day range.
Checks before use
- Use a current measured weight in kilograms.
- Identify whether the reference gives mg/kg/dose or mg/kg/day.
- Use a current drug reference and check the adult maximum when applicable.
